Daily Show with historian Jack Rakove on the founding fathers

Author Jack Rakove talking about his book, \”Revolutionaries\” on the Daily Show.

Here’s a look at historian Jack Rakove on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart discussing the variety of ways to look at the founding fathers and how they’re not one mass group but rather a set of unique individuals with their own agendas. Duh! What a concept. So much for oversimplification (or hijacking) of history.

    13. It was hypocritical for the Puritans to persecute the Quakers especially since the Puritans were persecuted in England. It caused them to suffer because of their religious beliefs, particularly since the Puritans left England because they had been regarded as those who gave support to a religious opinion that was not the same of the Authorized State Religion. The Puritans had been pursued by the English government because of their large demands of change for the Church of England which they requested for the authority.

This made them a “group not belonging”, as the Quakers were when they come to Boston, Massachusetts in the 1650’s. When the Puritans left England and came to Massachusetts to start up their religion the state of Massachusetts did not appoint clery and there was not a head body to regulate them. The Puritans spent a ling time putting together a system of Church government called The New England Way based on freedoms and rights. They believed their religion was the best so when the Quakers came with theirs they were not received graciously. This angered the Quakers so they did thinks like bursting into Puritan Church services, talking loud and getting naked in the streets to show their dislike for material and worldly things.

The Puritans told the Quakers to go along with their religion ways or they would be punished. So the Quakers told the King of England, they asked for help against the American Puritans telling the Horrors they had commit the King made a judgement to help the Quakers. Some say this was a beginning in creating democracy as we know and combining freedom and rights for all.
