Abraham Lincoln was a very important President of the United States. He was the 16th President during the civil war and called for the restriction of slavery rather than the total abolition. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at a play in 1865. He was an Illinois State legislator and a Whig. He issued the Emancipation of Proclamation which freed all slaves but it was mostly a political move. It made the war about slavery rather than a civil war in the eyes of other countries. It was impossible to enforce because the area that the slaves would have been freed from were succeeded.
